Construction is a mix of through hole parts, and some SM parts. The Si570 is SM, and about 15 capacitors and links are on the underside.
The synthesiser is intended for a fixed channel receiver, and will be configured with a default frequency to generate at startup, so the USB connection is only used to configure / calibrate the synthesiser.
